My Skin and Yours

As a female first generation Mexican-American with a lighter complexion the focus directed to my skin tone. My skin and my Mexican heritage bring awareness to the multitude of shades and skin tones throughout Latin American countries. These distinctions within my culture stretch past appearance. Regions across Latin American countries are unique within each parameter of dress, delicacies, and language.

To bring more awareness for Latinos, specifically from the country of Mexico with lighter complexions, I compiled collages over a series of 5 different self-portraits where I wore a Traditional Mexican style dress. My approach involved reaching out to fellow Mexican-American females who had different skin tones compared to mine. By cropping out certain areas from their portraits I was able to place them within my composition, making sure that my skin held its integrity as a part of a larger group of darker skin tones within the Mexican Community.
