My artwork is centered around exploring locations and areas that are described as banal. l arrange each composition in a way that will create a space that is unknown to others with the subjects that are shown in each photograph. The spaces captured are universal and not at the same time. Most compositions are in an analytical perspective to further explore the shapes, lines, shadows, and negative spaces of the captured areas. The wide framing for these photographs emphasizes the space's alienated identity.
Only recently has my work explored the complexities of my Mexican heritage as a first generation Mexican - American. I use historical references of dress and hierarchy in the pre-Columbian era from central Mexico to show my pride all while speaking on the issues within the Latin American community that highlight the assumptions behind our diversities. Oftentimes I am caught in between my identities and more so rejected from my Mexican identity. Latin Americans are diverse in many ways including language, clothing, customs, and, often unnoticed, skin color. For this area in my artwork I emphasize the strong connection I have with my heritage even with my lighter complexion.
